The funeral service for Dale Hilgemann, 74, Aberdeen, will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, August 12, 2013 at First United Methodist Church, Aberdeen, Pastor Tom Haggar officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Garden with honors to be performed by the South Dakota Highway Patrol Honor Guard. Dale died on Monday, August 5, 2013 at Sanford Medical Center, Sioux Falls, surrounded by family.

Visitation will be from 2:00-5:00 p.m. Sunday, August 11 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main Street, Aberdeen.

Dale Allen Hilgemann was born on June 17, 1939 at home in Leola SD to parents Gottfried and Fay (Hamilton) Hilgemann. He was baptized at the Reformed Church of Leola, and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran, Leola. He attended school in Leola, Westport and graduated from Barnard High School in 1957. Following high school Dale served four years in the U.S. Navy on board aircraft carrier Independence (out of Norfolk VA) and also spent a year in Keflavik Iceland.

Dale married the love of his life, Janet Kruse, on June 24, 1959, celebrating their 54th wedding anniversary this past June. He received an honorable discharge from the Navy in December of 1961. After discharge, Dale, Janet and son Bob (born November 20, 1960) lived in Wetonka. They moved into Aberdeen where Dale went to work for Standard Auto Supply. They welcomed their second child, daughter Deb, born on January 5, 1963 in Aberdeen.

Dale became a SD State Trooper in 1965 after training in Pierre and Aberdeen. In January 1966, Dale and family moved to Yankton SD to begin his State Trooper duties. Dale accepted a district transfer to Parker SD in 1967. In 1971, the family moved to Webster, SD where they remained until 1983, moving to Aberdeen, SD. Dale retired from the SD Highway Patrol in November of 1988. Since 1988, Dale has been employed with the SD Department of Revenue.

Dale was a member of First United Methodist Church, Aberdeen, the South Dakota Highway Patrol Retiree's Association, The American Legion, and past president of Barnard Alumni Association. Dale was a loving family man whose life revolved around attending his children's and grandchildren's sports events and other activities. He traveled many miles as a Aberdeen Central "Golden Eagle" Fan.

Grateful for having shared Dale's life are his wife Janet Hilgemann, Aberdeen; son Bob (Julie) Hilgemann, Aberdeen; daughter Deb (Dave) Abens, Aberdeen: grandchildren Bobi Hilgemann, Joshua Hilgemann, Tanner Abens and Lindsey Abens, sisters Evelyn Grieben, Aberdeen and Connie Hilgemann; Verona, VA: brothers Gerald (Maryanne) Hilgemann; Norwalk, IA; Ralph (Carol) Hilgemann, Jamestown, ND; brother-in-laws LaVern Hinz, Earl (LaVonne) Kruse, and sister-in-law Charlene Fleeger, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Gottfried and Fay Hilgemann and sister, Gloria Hinz.
